BIOGRAPHY

Abdullah Yateem was born in the city of Muharraq, Bahrain in 1953. From the age of six years he went to school in Muharraq until he graduated from high school. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kuwait in 1976. He then continued his postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom where he obtained a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh in 1991.

Prior to his appointment as Assistant Undersecretary for Press and Publications, Ministry of Information, Kingdom of Bahrain, in 2002, Abdullah Yateem was Assistant Undersecretary for Culture and National Heritage and Secretary General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature, Ministry of Information, Kingdom of Bahrain, from 1996 to 2002. During the period 1996-2002 he was Editor-in-Chief of al-Bahrain al-Thaqafia, a periodical published by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature. From 1991-96 he held the post of Assistant Professor of Anthropology, University of Bahrain.

Abdullah Yateem is a member of several academic societies and institutions. He is a Fellow of: the Royal Anthropological Institute [RAI], and the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies [BRISMES]. He is also a member of the following scientific societies: the American Anthropologists Association [AAA], the Middle East Studies Association [MESA], and the Association of Social Anthropologists [ASA].

Abdullah Yateem has a number of scientific contributions. These include anthropological fieldwork of the inhabitants of the Al-Hajar mountains in the United Arab Emirates from 1987-88. He has also published anthropological and ethnographic studies, research papers, and reviews in several scientific periodicals. His most important works include: Anthropological Notebook: Biographies and Conversation (2004), and Claude Levi-Strauss: Reading in Modern Anthropological Thought (2001).

Abdullah Yateem is at present Assistant Undersecretary for Press and Publications, Ministry of Information, Kingdom of Bahrain; a partime lecturer in Anthropology at various Bahraini Universities; and member of the International Fund for Promotion of Culture [IFPC-UNESCO]. He lives in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.
